So I’m hooked on Sons of Anarchy. Usually, like a good boy, I’ll go to bed and read for about half an hour or so. I read a lot of different stuff. The classics, because I like to think that I’m intellectual (and yes, I do read Penguin classics sometimes cos I’m a try hard hipster), modern literature because I like to feel like I’m on the pulse of the cutting edge, Harry Potter because I’m really a little kid at heart, Lord of the Rings because it’s awesome, historical accounts because then I can say “did you know…” with just the slightest air of knowing contempt… But then one of my friends lent me the first two seasons of Sons of Anarchy. As good as the Sopranos, he says. Addictive as hell, he says. Yeah yeah, I’ll probably watch one episode then get sick of it. So I watch one episode.

It’s crazy how consumed you can get by watching people go through their lives (granted, they are quite heavy, twisted lives that Jax, Clay and co. lead), but I just can’t stop watching. It’s just silly. I should be writing. I should be reading. I should be out seeing people, getting some fresh air. But no, I am just watching this brilliant show. What else have I been doing? I’ve been working. I’ve been for a few surfs. Nothing makes your head clear as much as getting into the water. I’ve been making sure I haven’t forgotten how to play an instrument. And I’ve been making excuses. To get back to the T.V. Just one more episode, I tell myself. Oh alright, one more. It’s 2am already, I might as well watch another one. Damn, I’ve got to get to work. No sleep. Again. Oh well, I’ve only got three more seasons to go, then I’m free! But for now, I’ve got to go. I have ‘things’ to do…

Love Ted

‘Sid delivered with his usual hopping-mad (and that’s not a metaphor) energy, while brother Ted thrashed about on his bass and Michael Fitzpatrick smashed his toms so hard that his snare went flying. Their sweaty, jarring and very noisy style of rock n roll certainly discomforted a few of the more well-dressed attendees, but a band like The Vasco Era doesn’t cater for folks like them. They’re too busy ending their set by jamming on a Jimi Hendrix riff and blowing out what’s left of the speakers. No two Vasco Era shows are the same, but they invariably end in some kind of carnage; an invaluable and ongoing contribution to Australian live music.’ – David Young, Pages Digital, 2nd Nov, 2011

On October 14, The Vasco Era will release a brand new, independent, self-titled album. Recorded live at Melbourne’s Sound Park Studios with producer Steven Schram, The Vasco Era is bursting with nearly freeform metal lashings of noise that whip around the bands blues.

To celebrate the new album, The Vasco Era and Sydney’s Papa vs Pretty are joining forces this October and November for a special double-headline tour. Both bands will play songs fresh off their new albums in venues right across Australia. With Papa vs Pretty enjoying critical praise for their debut album United in Isolation (released in May) and The Vasco Era preparing to release their highly anticipated self-titled album (out October 14), the time was right for both bands to jump in the tour van together. Audiences will see two of Australia’s most dynamic live bands under one roof – for the price of one.

It’s in the joyful energy borne from a reinvigorated band smashing it out live in the studio, and its in Sid’s throat-scraping, exorcising howl that proves The Vasco Era as a newly liberated entity – from their past demons, label, and – somewhat – themselves.

“a scorcher… distorted blues-rock and hook-laden anthems.” – Triple J Mag
